Indians Fall to Hurricanes 21-17

October 13, 2012

Monroe Area scores two second-half touchdowns to come from behind and beat Stephens County in Region 8-AAAA action Friday 21-17 in Monroe.

The Indians led 17-7 at halftime. However, Monroe Area’s Stanton Truitt scored on a 17-yard run with three and a half minutes left in the third quarter to cut it to 17-14.

Then following a missed field goal by the Indians, the Purple Hurricanes took the lead with just over eight minutes to go in the game on a Kwan (Kay-wan) Brooks 24-yard touchdown run.

Stephens County had the ball twice more in the fourth quarter in Monroe territory, but saw both possessions end in interceptions.

Indians’ Head Coach Travis Noland said the team played hard and just came up a little short.

“Our kids just got really tired at the end from chasing them all night long and I did a poor job of calling plays in the second half,” said Noland. “(We) did not get any points and I take responsibility for that. Our defensive staff did an incredible job of containing those guys all night long.”

Chaz Thornton had about 90 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Indians, while Tomas Colbert added 95 yards receiving with a touchdown catch from Dionte Mayfield. Elijah Barnes also had 94 yards receiving for Stephens County on three catches.

Truitt led the Purple Hurricanes with 126 yards rushing, two rushing touchdowns, and 88 yards passing. Brooks had 92 yards rushing and a touchdown for Monroe Area.

Stephens County scored first on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Colbert with five seconds left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Monroe Area tied it up at 7 with about eight minutes left in the first half on a Truitt 21-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-7.

A 58-yard Mayfield-to-Barnes catch set up a 33-yard Matt Moon field goal halfway through the second quarter to give the Indians a 10-7 lead.

Late in the first half, a blocked punt by B.J. Brown and halfback pass from Jabacus Wiley to Barnes set up Thornton’s 3-yard touchdown run to give the Indians the 17-7 halftime lead.

Stephens County is now 4-2 on the season overall and 1-2 in region play. Monroe Area moves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the region.

The Indians head back out on the road next Friday when they travel to Danielsville to take on Madison County.

In other 8-AAAA action Friday, Eastside beat Lanier 20-14, Chestatee shut out Walnut Grove 51-0, and Lumpkin beat Madison 34-20.

Elsewhere in northeast Georgia, Habersham Central beat Meadowcreek 31-12, Hart County beat Oconee County 58-19, and Franklin County fell to North Oconee 28-13.
