Indians Fall In Sweet 16

The Stephens County Indians stood toe to toe with undefeated and top ranked Upson-Lee on the Knight home floor, but came up just short falling 76-71 in Thomaston Thursday night in the round of 16 of the AAAA state playoffs.

The Indians started the game strong in front of a standing room only crowd and led the Knights 23-20 after one quarter. Both defenses tightened and the Indians were held to only six points in the 2nd quarter, and trailed at the half 34-29. The Knights outscored the Indians 20-19 in the third quarter to take a six point lead into the 4th when their lead grew to eleven. The Indians kept battling to get as close as three, but the Knights made their key free throws late to hold on for the win.

Stephens County senior NuNu Walker was burdened with foul trouble in the first half and was held to just two points in the half, but scored 16 in the second half that included 4- three pointers and led the team with 18 points. Ty Nails had 13 points, and Chaz Bridges and Deundra Singleton were also in double figures with 11 each.

The Knights were led by junior forward Tavias Fagan with a game high 29 points. Upson-Lee is now 29-0 and will advance to the elite eight where they will host Thomson next week. St. Pius from Region-8 also advanced with a three point victory over Mary Persons.

The Stephens County Indians very successful season ends with a record of 21-8.
