The Stephens County Indians will open the state AAAA football playoffs on the road tonight in metro Atlanta.
Stephens County will travel down to Marist to face the War Eagles.
The Indians enter the game 5-5 overall on the year and finished fourth in Region 8-AAAA after last week’s 31-28 loss to Lumpkin County at the Reservation.
Meanwhile, Marist enters the game 8-2 overall after winning the Region 6-AAAA title. The War Eagles are ranked as high as fifth in numerous state polls.
Both of these teams are regular playoff participants.
Stephens County is in the post-season for the 17th time in 18 years and 26th time in 28 years, while Marist has made the postseason in 31 straight years.
Indians’ Defensive Backs Coach Rocky Fulbright said the War Eagles’ record and tradition speaks for itself.
“They do what they do well,” said Fulbright. “They are very good offensively. They run the option. Smash mouth football down there and they do it well. They are not afraid to pass it either. They pass it when they need to and when you least expect it.”
Kick-off from Marist High School is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight. For those heading to the game, tickets at Marist are $8 at the gate.
Coverage on AM 630 WNEG begins tonight at 6 p.m. with Tommy Palmer’s Countdown to Kick-off. Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m., while pre-game coverage begins at 7:15 p.m.
The winner of tonight’s game plays the winner of the game between Gilmer and Troup.
In other first-round AAAA playoff action involving Region 8 teams, Region champ Monroe Area hosts Banneker, second seed Chestatee hosts Grady, and third seed Lanier visits Carver of Atlanta.
Other area teams in the state playoffs include Hart County, who will host St. Pius in a first round AAA playoff game, Elbert County, who will host Cedar Grove in a first-round AAA playoff game, and Rabun County, who travels to Greater Atlanta Christian in a first-round AA game.
