Indians Beat Habersham in Gridiron Scrimmage

The Stephens County Indians come out on the winning end of a scrimmage against Habersham Central.

Friday, the Indians beat the Raiders 27 to 14 at the Reservation in Toccoa.

Indians’ Head Coach Frank Barden says it was a typical scrimmage with some positives and some things that need more work.

“I was real proud of the defense,” said Barden. “They shut them out in the first half. We played real hard.”

According to Barden, he felt like the defense had a good week in preparation.

As for the offense, Barden said that it is no secret that the Indians will look to run the ball behind a strong offensive line.

“I thought we had some good and efficient throws, runs, and reads,” said Barden.

He said the goal is to go in and teach and improve.

“Don’t worry about what is on the other side of the fence,” said Barden. “Just worry about us.”

Stephens County scored all of its points in the first half on the way to a 27 to 0 lead.

Jackson Bell scored first for the Indians on a five-yard touchdown run to make it 6 to 0.

Just a couple of minutes later, Tyreik Cunningham scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to make it 13 to 0.

Stephens County made it 20 to 0 four minutes in to the second quarter on an eight-yard touchdown run from A.J. Howard.

Howard’s second touchdown run, this one from three yards out right before halftime, made it 27 to 0.

Habersham Central got on the board in the third quarter when Cole Wilbanks connected on a five-yard touchdown pass to Jim Barnett to make it 27 to 7.

The Raiders got their final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Garrett Kinsey scored on a four-yard touchdown run.

Besides the 27 points on offense, the Indians got two interceptions from Jermaine Barnett and an interception from Dylan Murphy.

Stephens County will be back in action on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Reservation against Hart County in another scrimmage.

Meanwhile, Habersham Central will be off until opening the regular season against Rabun County on August 28th.
