Indian Football Season Starts with Scrimmage Tonight

It’s the unofficial kickoff to the high school football season tonight as the Stephens County Indians head to Cleveland, Georgia for a pre-season match-up with the White County Warriors. The game has been moved up to 7 P.M.

Stephens County Head Football Coach Frank Barden gives us a rundown on the format for tonight’s game. “The first half will be all varsity players, the third quarter will be some varsity, and the fourth quarter will be our ninth grade and some JV. Hopefully, it will give us a chance to get our players on film and get to see a lot play and get a good evaluation of our kids.”

It has been a hot summer and the team has put in hard work going against each other. Barden says it will be nice to face a new face. “They are. It has been hot. School has started. We had a long week of camp. Just to have a game type week, and go to White County and play a tough opponent will be a really good thing for us.”

Stephens County is coming off a successful season in 2015. The Indians went 8-3 overall and finished 2nd in what was last year’s Region 8- AAAA that included White County. The Indians will see familiar teams in this year’s region in Madison County and North Oconee, but will face new foes St. Pius, Jefferson, and Oconee County led by former Stephens County Head Coach Travis Noland.

93.1 FM and AM-630 WNEG will air tonight’s pre-season scrimmage from White County. Airtime is set for 6:45 P.M. with the first play scheduled for 7 P.M. The game can also be heard on the world wide web at wnegradio.com.
