Stephens County High School running back Chaz Thornton is the offensive player of the year for Region 8-AAAA.
Thornton was one of nine players to receive all-region honors, according to the 8-AAAA All-Region team released by Georgia High School Football Daily Wednesday.
The senior running back finished the season with more than 1,500 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns. For his career, he had more than 6,000 career rushing yards and passed University of Georgia Heisman Trophy-winning running back Herschel Walker on the state rushing list with one of the top 15 career rushing totals in state history.
Meanwhile, eight other Indians were named either first or second-team all-region.
Senior wide receiver Tomas Colbert and senior offensive lineman Elisha Henderson were named first-team offense; senior defensive lineman BJ Brown, senior linebacker Jordan Williams, and senior defensive back Andrew Randall were named first-team defense; senior quarterback Dionte Mayfield and junior offensive lineman Thomas Lowery were named second-team offense; and sophomore defensive lineman Gary Walker was named second-team defense.
In other Region 8-AAAA honors announced Wednesday; Eastside senior defensive end Antonius Sims was named Defensive Player of the Year, Monroe Area junior quarterback and defensive back Stanton Truitt was named Athlete of the Year; and Monroe Area Head Coach Matt Fligg was named Coach of the Year.
Monroe Area and Eastside each had the most All-Region players honored with 10.
