Indian Boys’ Basketball On To States

The Stephens County Indians had four score in double figures, and added tough defense that forced turnovers and blocked shots to cruise to an easy victory over Jefferson 64-47 on the Dragons’ home floor last night in the Region 8-AAAA Basketball Tournament.

The Indians led 24-16 at the half, but outscored the Dragons 16-6 in the third quarter to blow the game open.

NuNu Walker led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points to lead the Indians, Malik Feaster had 12 points, Deundra Singleton 11, and Montavious Thornton 10.

Kason Rainey led Jefferson with 20 points.

The Indians improve to 19-6 this season.

With the win, the Indians not only advance to the semifinal round of the region tournament, but also secure a spot in the AAAA State playoffs.

The region tournament continues on Friday when the Indians will face Madison County in the semifinals on at 5:30 p.m. at Jefferson.

The two teams split with each winning on the others home floor in the regular season.

The other boys’ semifinal will pit North Oconee, a 57-47 winner over Oconee County Tuesday night, against the top seed St. Pius at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

In the girls’ bracket, Madison County’s Jordan Bailey scored 32 of her team’s 49 points to lead the Lady Red Raiders to a 49-31 win over the Stephens County Lady Indians.

The Lady Indians were led by Kaitlyn Phillips and Anaiah Wilson, each with 11 points.

The loss ends the Lady Indians’ season finishing with an overall record of 4-22.

In the other girls’ game played last night St. Pius defeated Oconee County 36-31. The girls’ semifinals on Friday will feature North Oconee Vs. St. Pius at 4 p.m. and Madison County vs. the top seed Jefferson at 7 p.m.

Our next broadcast on WNEG will be Friday at 5:20 p.m. when the Stephens County Boys face Madison County.

All of the games on Friday will again be played at The Arena on the campus of Jefferson High School.
