The Stephens County Indian baseball team sweeps Lanier in Region 8-AAAA play.
The Indians beat the Longhorns 4-2 Wednesday at Lanier High School in a region game.
Tied at two in the top of the seventh, Logan Bell tripled to bring home Mason Long and Davis McCall with the go-ahead runs. Long had reached on a fielder’s choice, while McCall had walked.
Then, Indian pitcher Kain Dyer-Hewitt got Lanier’s Kameron Doster to ground into a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.
Dyer-Hewitt picked up the win for Stephens County on the mound, going the distance and striking out five while allowing only two runs.
Ryan Cleveland and Max Thomas added first-inning RBI doubles for Stephens County. Lanier’s two runs came on a two-run home run in the first inning by T.J. Richardson.
With the win, the Indians improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in Region 8-AAAA play. Lanier is 11-5 overall and falls to 4-2 in region play.
Stephens County returns to action Friday when they welcome Chestatee to the Reservation in region play.
