Indian Baseball Opens Region Play With Win

The Stephens County Indian baseball team defeated the Madison County Red Raiders Tuesday evening 9-1 at the Reservation to pick up their first Region 8-AAAA win of the season.

Senior Josh Slate pitched six innings, giving up just one run in the win.  Slate struck out six and walked four.

Mason Long pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Indians.

The Indians scored three runs in the third inning, helped out by three Madison County errors.

Then, Evan Rumsey hit a three-run homerun in the fourth inning for Stephens County.

The Indians added a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Long, Logan Bell, and Tristen Powell also each had RBIs for Stephens County.

Freshman catcher Golston Gillespie drove in the only Madison County run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Red Raider right-hander Austin Dean started and went 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs to take the loss.

The Indians and Red Raiders will play again today in Danielsville.

Game time is 5:55 p.m. and air time on AM 630 WNEG and is set for 5:45 p.m.
