The Stephens County Indian baseball team gets back on the winning track at home.
The Indians pushed across a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and hung on for a 2-1 win over the Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes Saturday at the Reservation.
Ryan Cleveland and Austin Lord each had RBI singles to give the Indians a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth after Indian centerfielder Mason Long kept it scoreless in the top of the fifth by throwing out Monroe Area’s Jacob Olsen at the plate.
Meanwhile, Wes Wommack doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh to score Josh Hawbaker and make it a one-run game.
However, Dustin McCall relieved starter Josh Slate with runners at third and second and struck out Monroe Area’s Corey Olsen to end the game. Slate picked up the win for the Indians, while McCall gets credit for the save.
The win gives the Indians a 16-4 overall record and an 11-2 record in Region 8-AAAA. Monroe Area is now 9-11 overall and 6-7 in the region.
These same two teams will play again Tuesday at Monroe Area. Game time today is 5:55 p.m. with airtime on AM 630 WNEG and wnegradio.com set for 5:45 p.m.
