Identities Released in Fatal Car-Train Collision

May 7, 2013

Authorities are releasing the names of the three people killed in a fatal train-car collision over the weekend in Stephens County.

Stephens County Coroner Chris Stephens said Monday night that the three individuals killed in the collision were 22-year-old Areale Leigh Nunn of Austell, 23-year-old Erich Boecklbauer of Austell and 20-year-old Crystal Crews of Kennesaw.

The collision occurred at about 9:45 p.m. Friday at a railroad crossing on Grant Smith Road, near the Summit subdivision.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the three were headed to Toccoa to visit friends and were killed when the Amtrak Crescent train heading northbound into Toccoa struck their 2008 Mazda.

Shirley said the train carried the vehicle about 300 feet up the track and the vehicle turned over several times before it landed in a ravine upside down where it caught fire.

Nobody on the train was hurt in the accident.
