April 16, 2013

Police in the Cherokee County town of Holly Springs say a Toccoa man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with authorities in Cherokee County Sunday morning.

Holly Springs Police Spokesperson Tanya Smith said that police responded to 911 calls Sunday morning regarding a man walking along the southbound lanes of Interstate 575 with a gun to his head.

Smith said officers arrived and found 30-year-old James Allen Woods, Jr. of Toccoa dressed in a protective, bulletproof style vest on the side of I-575.

According to Smith, Woods made his way over to the edge of a wooded area along the interstate and sat down.

Smith said that authorities from multiple agencies communicated with Woods.

However, Smith said Woods died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound about two hours after police responded.

Smith went on to say that authorities are still trying to determine a motive.
