Historic Plaque Unveiled at Hayes of Toccoa

Main Street Toccoa unveils the latest in its yearly series of historic plaques.

The newest plaque in this year’s series was unveiled last Thursday at a ceremony at Hayes of Toccoa on Pond Street in downtown Toccoa.

Members of the Tabor family, former employees of Tabor Motor Company and current employees of Hayes of Toccoa, the Toccoa Historic Preservation Commission, and others were all on hand for the brief ceremony.

Marvin Tabor Sr. and Dick Barron opened Tabor Motor Company in the 1930s and after the end of World War II, the car business moved to the Pond Street location.

Tabor Motor Company continued under various ownership until 2006, when Hayes acquired the franchise.

The property remains a car dealership today.

Toccoa’s historic plaque program highlights 10 historic buildings in Toccoa each year.

One historic plaque is unveiled each month.

City officials said that once all of the plaques have been installed, a walking tour podcast will accompany them to further bring historical awareness to downtown Toccoa.
