GSP Releases More Info on Monday Accident

More information is available on Monday’s fatal accident in Stephens County.

31-year-old Casey Neal Smith of Toccoa died as a result of the accident that occurred at about 2:15 p.m. Monday on Georgia Highway 106 in the area of Old Mize Road in Stephens County.

The Georgia State Patrol said Smith was driving a Honda Accord southbound on Highway 106 when the Accord traveled into the northbound lane and struck a Ford Super Duty truck that was traveling northbound head on.

GSP officials said it is unknown as to why the Accord went into the northbound lane.

A passenger in Smith’s vehicle, 23-year-old Ashley Chapman, reportedly of Toccoa, was injured and airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.

The driver of the Ford pick-up, which was a Georgia Department of Transportation vehicle, was identified as 36-year-old Jason Tyrus Hill of Maysville.

He was taken to Ty Cobb Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries, according to the GSP.

That area of Highway 106 was closed for a couple of hours Monday afternoon because of the accident.
