Georgia Marks Severe Weather Preparedness Week

State emergency management officials are urging people to take this week to prepare for severe weather emergencies.

This week is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Georgia.

Georgia Emergency Management Agency Spokesperson Lisa Janek said they are encouraging people to use this week as a reminder to do something to prepare for all different kinds of severe weather, whether it be a tornado threat, flooding, or even a winter storm.

Janek said one of the most important things people can do is to prepare a kit of emergency supplies.

“Make sure you have a supply of non-perishable food, a three-day supply of water,” said Janek. “If your power goes out, you need a flashlight, a first aid kit, a regular (AM/FM) radio, and make sure you have something to charge your cell phone (with) in an emergency.”

She added another thing to have on hand is a NOAA Weather Radio.

According to Janek, something else people should remember to do is talk with their families about how to get in touch with each other during emergencies.

She said that includes a plan for communicating with family members if everyone is not in the same place.

“Identify an ‘out of town’ contact,” said Janek. “Sometimes it is easier to contact someone out of state than across town in an emergency. Talk to your family about alternate ways to get in touch with each other.”

Janek said that also includes having meeting places for everyone to gather in case of an emergency.

“If you have a fire, you want to have one meeting place in your neighborhood,” said Janek. “Have another meeting place outside of your neighborhood.”
