GBI Says $1.5 Million in Drugs Seized Wednesday

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that authorities seized $1.5 million in drugs while serving search warrants as part of Wednesday’s dismantling of a multi-million dollar drug trafficking operation.

According to the GBI, over 6 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than 4 kilograms of cocaine, and 10 pounds of marijuana were all seized as of 9 a.m. Thursday.

On Wednesday, some 200 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers served more than 20 search warrants and raided properties in Stephens County, north Georgia, metro Atlanta, and South Carolina as part of the effort.

The warrants were the culmination of a 10-month investigation by the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, with the cooperation of the FBI, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, and Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office.

Authorities identified the ringleader of this trafficking operation as 31-year-old Horace Mayfield of Barrow County.

According to police, Mayfield is a Stephens County native who based his drug operation out of Stephens County.

Over the last year, authorities said Mayfield’s operation was responsible for $9.5 million in drugs.

Authorities arrested more than 20 people in Georgia and South Carolina Wednesday as part of this operation.
