The Georgia Department of Transportation is preparing for a busy weekend on the roads this Labor Day holiday.
Georgia DOT Spokesperson Teri Pope said that the DOT is stopping construction-related lane closures to help those taking the state’s highways this holiday weekend.
According to Pope, construction-related lane closures are suspended from noon today through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
“We could have lane closures to clean up crashes or if there is some type of emergency maintenance,” said Pope.
Pope did caution motorists that even though no road work is scheduled, the work zones will remain in place and in effect along the state’s interstates and state routes.
“There are going to be barrels, equipment, some rough pavement, and lane shifts,” said Pope. “Please slow down and use caution realizing that there is more traffic out there and realizing that fines are doubled in work zones even if workers are not present.”
Pope reminded travelers to call 511 for updated traffic information in Georgia this weekend.
Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather.
