Ga. Ag Commissioner Offers Winter Fuel Tips

As winter approaches, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black offers tips on how to properly handle and store fuel during the cold season.

First, Black said people should purchase the proper fuel that is recommended for various engines and store it in proper containers.

He said people should never store fuel in containers with open or leaking spouts because leaking spouts are a fire safety hazard and promotes the absorption of moisture which can cause fuel to turn stale quicker.

Also, Black said people should shake the fuel container for 30 seconds just prior to filling up equipment to ensure the fuel is mixed properly.

Black said people should always store fuel in a cool dry area to reduce the formation of condensation inside the fuel container.

He added that fuel should never be stored in a house or by an open flame.

His final tip is to drain fuel from the equipment’s tank or use a fuel stabilizer when preparing to put it into winter storage.
