Funeral Services Today For Woman Hit By Train

Funeral services are scheduled for today for the woman killed when she was struck by a train earlier this month in Stephens County.

Graveside services for 36-year-old Olympia Ann Fleming will be today at 2 p.m. at Hurricane Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Martin.

Fleming, of East Whitman Street in Toccoa, was killed when she was hit by a Norfolk Southern cargo train near the Stonewall Court bridge in the area of the Toccoa-Stephens County Airport early in the evening of January 16.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said that the engineer told authorities that Fleming and a man were both walking along the tracks.

According to the engineer’s account, the man moved to the other side of the tracks as the train approached, but Fleming did not, even after the train sounded its horn and flashed its lights multiple times.

Shirley said Fleming was struck by the left side of the train, was thrown off of the tracks onto the shoulder area, and died instantly.
