Franklin County High School students are mourning the loss of one of their own this morning after a wreck over the weekend.

It happened Saturday on State Route 63.

Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas said that 16-year old Matt Walters was driving down State Route 63 near his home when  his vehicle suddenly left the road and hit a tree.

Walters was life-flighted to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Thomas said witnesses driving behind Walters’ vehicle told authorities he did not appear to make any attempt to stop or avoid going off the road.

Thomas said it appears Walters may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Friends have been posting condolences on Walters’ Facebook page all weekend.

Walters was known for his athletic ability as a Franklin County Lion.

He played a number of different positions for the team on both offense and defense.

Funeral arrangements for Walters have not been announced yet.
