Franklin Co. Habitat for Humanity Preparing for Eighth House

Franklin County Habitat for Humanity is preparing for its eighth build and it is set to be in the center of Lavonia.

According to Franklin County Habitat Executive Director Cathy Wood, the group recently purchased several old houses on Rainbow Drive.

“We did acquire them from Miss Vandiver,” Wood said. “She was so gracious and we are so grateful that we were able to get them and put some nice houses there. We will have another story on the ground breaking coming up later on.”

Right now, there are three older, smaller homes along that side of Rainbow Drive.

The current residents are renting those homes, but Wood said plans are to eventually tear all of those homes down and build new Habitat homes in their place.

Wood said she is planning a special sale event at the Habitat Thrift store on Highway 17 in Lavonia next week to raise money to put towards building its eighth house.

“We’re going to have a red dot sale,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of people over the Fourth of July weekend and this will be a good time for them to come out and look at what we’ve got on sale.”

This is the first time the Franklin County Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store has held a red dot sale.

It will take place from July 5 to 9.

Wood said Franklin County Habitat for Humanity is trying to raise some $40,000 to start on its eighth house, which will be the first of the new homes on Rainbow Drive.

She said the community has been very supportive and that support is appreciated.
