Four Killed So Far on Ga. Highways Over Christmas Travel Period

The Georgia Department of Public Safety is reporting four traffic fatalities so far on Georgia highways this Christmas holiday weekend.

Georgia State Patrol posts in LaGrange, Griffin, Helena, and Thomasville have reported those fatalities so far.

The official Christmas holiday travel weekend for the Georgia State Patrol started at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and continues through midnight Sunday.

It is 102 hours long.

The Georgia State Patrol urged drivers to use extra caution when traveling across the state and allow extra time to reach one’s destination.

In addition, state troopers will be out on full patrols with local law enforcement throughout Georgia looking to spot motorists not obeying traffic laws.

The Christmas holiday period, along with the coming New Year’s holiday, is also a mobilization period for Operation Zero Tolerance.

During “Operation Zero Tolerance,” state troopers team up with law enforcement officials from across the state for a high visibility enforcement campaign that targets impaired drivers.

During last year’s Christmas holiday period, which was only 30 hours long, 25 arrests were made for driving under the influence.

Meanwhile, as a reminder, the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended construction-related lane closures through 10 p.m. Sunday on interstates and major state routes across Georgia.
