Four Killed on Ga. Highways So Far Over Memorial Day Weekend

May 27, 2013

State law enforcement officials are reporting four fatalities so far during the Memorial Day holiday travel weekend.

Georgia State Patrol posts in Milledgeville, Reidsville, and Thomasville have reported fatal wrecks, as has the Fulton County Police Department.

The Memorial Day holiday travel count started at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through midnight.

Last year, 16 people were killed on Georgia highways during the Memorial Day holiday travel period.

As a reminder, the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended construction-related lane closures on Georgia interstates and primary state routes through 5 a.m. Tuesday.

However, officials caution that emergency lane closures could become necessary on any route.

The DOT urges travelers to use 511 to get real-time traffic information. It is a free phone call from any phone in Georgia. People can also download a 511 app for cell phones or go online to www.511ga.org.
