Flags are flying at half-staff in the City of Lavonia in memory of longtime city councilman Carl David Whitworth.

Whitworth died early Wednesday morning at his home on Bluebird Lane in Lavonia.

Whitworth served as a city councilman in Lavonia from 1972 to 1991 and again from 1993 to 2003.

On Wednesday, Mayor Ralph Owens ordered flags to be lowered in Whitworth’s honor. The flags will remain at half-staff until after the funeral service Sunday.

Born and raised in Lavonia, Whitworth was a graduate of Lavonia High School and a veteran of the U.S. National Guard.

He was retired from General Telephone & Electronics and the Lavonia Fire Department. After retirement, he worked with Strickland Funeral Home for many years, as well as refereeing Recreation League Ball.

A memorial service for Whitworth will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lavonia.
