Fire Safety Festival Saturday in Stephens Co.

A local organization will promote fire safety at an event this weekend.

People First of Stephens County will hold its annual Fire Safety Festival this Saturday at the Fernside Drive Fire Department in Toccoa.

People First of Stephens County is an advocacy group for individuals with disabilities.

People First Supporter Jeraldine Hayes said the group has organized this event now for the last several years.

“The group came up with the idea after a severely disabled young man was burned to death in a fire,” said Hayes. “We decided that we needed to provide some information about how to escape a house on fire.”

Saturday’s Fire Safety Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hayes said there will be a lot of useful information for people, as well as a lot of other activities going on.

“We just want to encourage the community to come out and support this and be educated on how to escape a house on fire,” said Hayes. “It is very important. We are approaching winter.”

Those other activities include refreshments and the opportunity to donate blood.
