Feds To Investigate Habersham Drug Raid

Federal authorities say they are now going to investigate the Habersham County drug raid that injured a young child.

U.S. Northern District Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said that federal authorities have been participating in the investigation of this incident and now that a state grand jury has declined to return an indictment, her office will review the matter for possible federal charges.

A Habersham County grand jury announced on Monday that it had decided not to charge any of the law enforcement officers involved in the drug raid.

In that raid on May 28 at a home in Cornelia, a child, who was 19 months old at the time, was injured when Habersham County authorities threw a “flashbang” grenade into the residence while serving a search warrant as part of a drug investigation.

The child suffered serious injuries, from which he continues to recover.

Starting last week, a Habersham County grand jury met for six days to hear evidence and testimony related to the incident.

According to a report on accessnorthga.com, the grand jury found no criminal intent, but in its report, it called the investigation leading up to the incident “sloppy.”
