Franklin County investigators continue to look into the case of a man who brought a gun to Tates Creek Baptist Church last Sunday that went off accidentally and so far, no charges have been filed.
Thursday afternoon, Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas said investigators are still talking to the man.
Thomas said the man was carrying the gun in his right front pocket last Sunday during church service when it fired and the bullet hit the man in the right knee.
Thomas said the man was taken to Stephens County Hospital and is in a wheelchair as he recovers from his injury.
Thomas said he is consulting with the district attorney on the case.
“That’s one of the places where you are not supposed to bring a firearm, into a house of worship,” said Thomas.
Thomas said earlier this week, the situation could have been much worse and it’s not clear why the man had a gun in church in the first place.
