Family Connection Fundraiser Coming Up This Month

A trivia contest involving both Stephens County students and area adults this month will help raise money for a local organization.

Family Connection of Stephens County is hosting the third annual “Are You Smarter than a Stephens County 5th Grader?” competition on October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tugaloo Performing Arts Center at Stephens County High School in Toccoa.

Allyson Warren is the Coordinator for Family Connection of Stephens County.

She said the event is based on the game show, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?”

“We have a team of fifth grade students from our Fifth Grade Academy at Stephens County Middle School that have been selected by their teachers as the best and the brightest and we have teams of adults that compete against those fifth graders in trivia,” said Warren.

For a $50 donation, people can form a two to three person team to compete. There are also other sponsorship opportunities available.

The deadline to register a team is Monday.

The public is then invited to head out to the Tugaloo Performing Arts Center on October 22 to watch the fun.

Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 are free.

Warren said all of the money raised benefits three different programs that Family Connection of Stephens County is in charge of.

“One of them is the Read-At-Home program,” said Warren. “We send age-appropriate books to children under the age of five every month. We also have our ‘First Steps’ program, which is a maternal education program that we provide to mothers under the age of five as well. We also have our mentoring program, where we pair adults with students in our school system that may be at a higher risk of dropout.”

Family Connection of Stephens County is a 501c3 non-profit so all donations are tax-deductible.

Warren said everyone is invited to what should be a lot of fun, family entertainment.

“I would really appreciate the support for our fifth grade students,” said Warren. “They have worked really hard. They are really bright and entertaining. I think most people who come out to this realize it is a night of comedy, so we really hope that people will come out and enjoy it.”
