The new Athletic and Wellness Complex on the campus of Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs was officially opened this past weekend.
Hundreds of Emmanuel College students, faculty and alumni gathered Saturday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the building and grounds.
The ceremony was part of the Christian college’s Homecoming weekend.
“Today is a miracle day,” Emmanuel College President Michael Stewart said just before he snipped a red ribbon strung across the front doors to the center.
The $10 million athletic center contains 76,000 square feet of athletic space, including a basketball arena; volleyball and intramural-sports courts; an indoor track; a student fitness center with free weights, cardio machines, and an aerobics room; a swimming pool; a bowling alley; and a food court.
Stewart told the crowd the new athletic complex and wellness center is unique to the region.
“This is a historic moment,” Stewart said. “Not just for Emmanuel College, but for our entire northeast Georgia community. So, we are so proud of this gift that God has provided not only for us and future generations, but for our community as well.”
After the ceremony, visitors toured the building.
Plans call for additional outdoor facilities, which will include baseball and softball stadiums, eight tennis courts, a soccer field, a lacrosse field, and a sports field house with visitors’ locker rooms.
