Early Voting Set For Saturday

Stephens County voters who cannot make it to early voting during the week have a chance to cast their ballots this weekend to avoid lines on Election Day.

According to Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran, polls will be open on Saturday (Oct. 29) for early voting.

“Our early voting location will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said Cochran.  “We provide that for people who cannot get here during the week.  We urge them, if they cannot come vote during the week, take advantage of this Saturday.”

The early voting location is at the Stephens County Registrar’s Office on Tugalo Street in downtown Toccoa.

Voters will need a picture ID.

Cochran said turnout during early voting has been very high in Stephens County so far.

“We have already voted 29 percent of the active voters in Stephens County through early voting, which is a total of 3,768 as of Thursday morning,” said Cochran.  “We have 5 percent of our active voters that received absentee ballots, which is a very high number for us too.”

That makes the total turnout around 34 percent as of Thursday morning.

Early voting continues next week, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Registrar’s Office.

For those who do not vote early, polls will be open on Election Day, November 8, at the Stephens County Senior Center.

Also, absentee paper ballots must be returned to the Registrar’s Office by November 8 at 7 p.m.

Voters are of course, making their choice in the presidential election, but there are other races on the ballot.

In Stephens County, voters are choosing a State Court Solicitor as Democratic incumbent Willie Woodruff runs against Republican challenger Ann Pickett.

Also, Johnny Isakson is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate against two challengers, Democrat Jim Barksdale and Libertarian Allen Buckley.

In addition, there is a Public Service Commission race and a host of state constitutional amendment questions on the ballot.

Those who do not vote early will cast ballots on November 8 at the Stephens County Senior Center.
