DRC Hosting Equipment Cleaning and Collection Event in Toccoa

A regional organization is hosting a collection and cleaning event for durable medical equipment in Stephens County this week.

The Disability Resource Center will host that event on January 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stephens County Senior Center on Rose Lane in Toccoa.

Disability Resource Center Board Chair Bill Graham said the first thing people will be able to do at the event is bring durable medical equipment and put it into a HUBSCRUB machine in order to clean it.

“That is equipment like crutches, non-electric wheelchairs, walkers, anything a person might use frequently for whatever reason, for whatever reason, it might get soiled and need cleaning,” said Graham. “A person can bring this equipment in. It is quick. We have special detergent. It will make it very clean.”

Graham said this type of cleaning is effective because it is not harsh on the upholstery and wheel bearings of the equipment.

Meanwhile, the event will also be accepting donations for the Disability Resource Center’s Equipment Reuse Program.

Graham said this program offers equipment to consumers who normally would not have the means to purchase such because of lack of insurance or financial resources.

“If people have crutches or wheelchairs or walkers that they are no longer using, we can take those in, clean them up, refurbish them, and that will help someone else who might need that who cannot afford it,” said Graham.

Graham said the Disability Resource Center covers a 13-county area, including Stephens County.

He encouraged people to learn more about the agency either by coming out to this event or calling its offices.
