DOT To Temporarily Close Yow Mill/17 Intersection

The Georgia Department of Transportation is announcing a traffic change that will start next week as part of the State Route 17 widening project in Stephens County.

According to the DOT, Yow Mill Road will be closed at its intersection with State Route 17 starting next Thursday, October 15.

Georgia DOT Spokesperson Teri Pope said the intersection has to be re-done because of the new, four lane Highway 17 that is being built.

“We are having to lower the grade of Yow Mill Road where it intersects with State Route 17 to the proper height,” said Pope. “We cannot do that with traffic running on the roadway.”

Pope went on to say that there will be a detour in place for drivers who normally use that intersection.

“Folks will be directed down Sisk Road,” said Pope. “It will only be about 250 feet of Yow Mill closest to intersection that will be closed. It will be closed for a maximum of 60 days.”

This is all of the part of the project to build a four-lane State Route 17 from the Stephens County-Franklin County line to Memorial Drive in Toccoa.

Pope said that project is progressing.

The scheduled completion date for the whole project is May 31, 2016.
