DOT Suspending Construction-Related Lane Closures for Holiday

The Georgia Department of Transportation is readying for another busy travel weekend on the state’s highways.

DOT Spokesperson Katie Strickland said the agency is doing its best to make travel as easy as possible this weekend for people traveling around Georgia.

“We are going to help people out this New Year’s, just like we always do around the holidays,” said Strickland. “We are going to suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstates and major state routes from 5 a.m. Saturday, December 31 through 5 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2017 for the New Year’s holiday travel. We are anticipating increased holiday traffic as these holidays have been falling over the weekend.”

As always, the DOT said that incident-related or emergency-related lane closures may still be necessary at any time on any route so people should drive alert, use caution on the highways, and allow plenty of time to get to their destinations.

Strickland also encouraged travelers to plan ahead if headed somewhere this weekend.

“We also advise that travelers call 511 before getting on the road,” said Strickland. “It is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel info statewide, including traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays.”

511 is also available online at www.511ga.org or by downloading the free Georgia 511 mobile app for either Apple or Android devices.
