DOT Ready for Memorial Day Travel
The Georgia Department of Transportation is preparing for a lot of motorists to hit the state’s highways this Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Department of Transportation Spokesperson Teri Pope said that in order to help with traffic flow, the DOT is suspending construction-related lane closures on Georgia interstates and major state highways from noon today through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
“Memorial Day is one of the highest volume weekends for vehicular traffic because everybody drives where they are going to go for the holiday,” said Pope.
Pope said that there could be lane closures for emergency repairs, crashes, or something of that nature.
She reminded anyone heading out this weekend on the roads that they should be careful.
“There will be equipment, barrels, lane shifts,” said Pope. “What it means is that there will be no activity or additional lane closures. Please slow down and pay attention.”
Pope also said that the detour route on State Route 51 near Hartwell remains in place due to the sinkhole that formed earlier this month.
She said the DOT is moving forward with getting that stretch of road repaired as quickly as possible.
However, she says that will take time.
