DOT Announces Upcoming Temporary Road Closure Along GA 17

The Georgia Department of Transportation is announcing an upcoming temporary road closure along the State Route 17 construction project in Stephens County.

Davis Road will be closed at its intersection with State Highway 17 for about 60 days beginning next Monday, January 26, if weather permits.

Georgia DOT Spokesperson Teri Pope said the closure will affect the approximately 500 feet closest to Davis Road’s intersection with Highway 17 and will last for about 60 days.

“Davis Road has to be raised by eight feet where it comes in to meet State Route 17,” said Pope.

Pope said there will be a detour in place for traffic looking to access Davis Road from Highway 17.

“State Route 17 will not change,” said Pope. “Only Davis Road where it comes in to 17 will change. The detour route will be State Route 17 to Hickory Log Circle and then to Davis Road. You will not be able to use Davis Road to turn on to State Route 17.”

She went on to say traffic looking to access State Route 17 from Davis Road will flip the detour and use Hickory Log Circle to get out to the highway.

This work is part of the project to build a four-lane Highway 17 from the Stephens-Franklin County line to Memorial Drive in Toccoa.

Pope said that work is going well on the project, even through the winter months.

“The projects usually slow down somewhat during the winter, but this one has been able to continue,” said Pope.

The new, four-lane Highway 17 is scheduled to be complete in the Spring of 2016.
