Dorsey Under Contract Until 2018 After School Board Approves Extension

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey receives a new three-year contract.

Following an executive session at Tuesday’s meeting, the Stephens County Board of Education voted unanimously to authorize a new three-year contract for Dorsey that would run through April 2018.

Board of Education Chair Tony Crunkleton said there were two reasons he felt a new contract was needed, one year into Dorsey’s original three-year agreement.

He said one was to provide continued stability as the school system works through its budget reduction plan.

“Since we passed this budget reduction plan, I feel like it is important that we try to retain his leadership during that period, which is a multi-year period of reductions,” said Crunkleton.

Crunkleton said the second reason was to make an addition to the new contract that was not in the original contract.

“His contract does not have vacation days built in to the contract as it stated now,” said Crunkleton. “I would make a motion to add 10 vacation days with pay as part of his contract.”

Crunkleton said other terms of the contract, including the monetary terms remain the same.

Under the terms of his original contract, Dorsey received an initial annual salary of $125,000 per year, with his original contract also stating that Dorsey shall receive an annual percentage increase equal to any increase in the State Minimum Salary Schedule and may receive additional increases in salary if granted by or negotiated with the Board of Education based on his performance.

In addition, Dorsey said he has taken a reduction in pay in accordance with the calendar reduction days as have other school system staff.

Dorsey said he appreciates the Board’s confidence in him.

“This is a community we love and my wife and I are very pleased to be in Stephens County and look forward to continuing that,” said Dorsey. “It is a staff that while we have been through some challenges, I have grown close to and I look forward to working with them. We have great kids and a great community and I am proud to be a part of that.”

Dorsey’s initial three-year contract started on May 1, 2014 and was to run through April 30, 2017.
