District 2 Public Health Names New Director

District Two Public Health has a new director.

Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald announced Tuesday that she has appointed Dr. Pamela Logan as the new District Health Director for District 2.

She will replace the retiring director, Dr. David Westfall.

According to state officials, Dr. Logan will begin her new role as District Health Director today and then will work with Dr. Westfall during a time of transition until his retirement on December 31.

Dr. Logan received a B.S. in biology from Spelman College, her medical degree from Howard University and her MPH in healthcare management and policy from Emory University.

She also earned a masters degree in English from Georgia State University and completed a Preventive Medicine Residency at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a preventive medicine resident, the state says her work included evaluation of influenza rates among elderly minority residents of DeKalb County through the DeKalb County Board of Health.

Officials said Dr. Logan initiated educational programs in senior centers, after which the rates of vaccination increased throughout the county and treatment for influenza in the county decreased in this population.

During her work at the CDC, Dr. Logan served as a medical epidemiologist and medical officer with the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service.

Also, Dr. Logan has investigated infectious disease outbreaks, including hepatitis A and Tuberculosis, during her career in Public Health.
