Deer Firearms Season Starting in Ga.

Firearms season for deer is here in Georgia.

It arrives on Saturday.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division is reminding hunters as deer firearms season gets underway to always put safety first, use courtesy, respect the property where you hunt, and make sure to obey all state laws.

Regarding safety, the DNR said hunters should never cut corners.

Hunters are reminded to wear fluorescent orange, practice firearm safety, and use extreme caution if hunting from a tree stand.

The DNR also said hunters need to remember to always be sure of their target and the area beyond the target.

Also, hunters must secure landowner permission on private property.

DNR Law Enforcement Director Colonel Eddie Henderson said shooting deer at night or from a public road, along with hunting out of season or private property without permission are all illegal activities that the state will continue to aggressively enforce.

The DNR is also reminding hunters about poaching laws.

According to the DNR, poaching is legally defined as illegal shooting, trapping, or taking of game or fish from private or public property, but in the conservation law enforcement community, the DNR says a poacher is a thief who steals wildlife that belongs to all citizens.

The DNR said anyone who sees a poacher should call the state’s Ranger Hotline Program at 1-800-241-4113.
