Currahee Lane Bridge Still Closed

Stephens County is still waiting for further instructions before moving forward on the repair of a bridge along Currahee Lane.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, the county is still waiting on a formal bridge report from the Georgia Department of Transportation before the county can move forward with the issues on the Currahee Lane Bridge.

Ayers said they have contacted the DOT to see when the report will be available, but a timeline has not been given.

Last month, Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers announced that the bridge on Currahee Lane, between the Toccoa By-pass and the intersection of Currahee Lane and Old Carnes Creek Road, had to be closed immediately for safety reasons.

The order came from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Ayers said that the DOT made the call while inspecting the bridge as part of normal bridge inspections being done in the county.

According to Ayers, a letter from the DOT mandating the closure said the bridge was “no longer safe for live, vehicular loading.”

She said it must be closed until repairs are made or the bridge is replaced and at this point, there is no timeline for making those repairs and getting the bridge back open to traffic.
