Currahee Lane Bridge In GDOT Pipeline

A bridge in Stephens County closed until it is fixed or replaced is moving through the state’s project timeline.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said the Currahee Lane bridge is currently in the design phase.

Last month, Ayers announced that the bridge on Currahee Lane, between the Toccoa By-pass and the intersection of Currahee Lane and Old Carnes Creek Road, had to be closed immediately for safety reasons, per the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Now, Ayers said that preliminary bridge layouts for the project are currently under review by the state DOT.

She said the most recent schedule update she was given shows construction beginning possibly in December of this year.

However, Ayers said there might be a chance that the project could be advanced to the Fall by the DOT.

The bridge on Currahee Lane between the By-pass and Old Carnes Creek was closed while the DOT was inspecting the bridge as part of normal bridge inspections being done in the county.

According to Ayers, a letter from the DOT mandating the closure said the bridge was “no longer safe for live, vehicular loading” and it had to be closed until repairs were made or the bridge was replaced.
