County Landfill Officially Capped, Closed

December 17, 2013

Stephens County officially gets its landfill closed.

County Administrator Phyllis Ayers announced last week that Fort Lamar Services had completed the third and final phase of landfill closure.

Ayers said that even though the landfill has been capped off and closed, the issue is not completely over.

“It goes into the post-closure phase, which is 30 years after closure, that we will continue to pay monitoring fees at the landfill,” said Ayers.

That third and final phase of closing the landfill, located off of Highway 145 in Stephens County, took longer than expected after commissioners granted a time extension due to delays caused by rains that fell earlier this year.
