The Savannah District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it is beginning seasonal weekend closures at the visitor’s centers at both Lakes Hartwell and Russell.
According to the Corps, from now through February 24, the visitor’s centers will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Officials said that the weekend closures are a result of declining winter visitation numbers at the lakes.
Weekend operation of the visitor’s centers will resume on March 2, 2013.
The Corps did note that the Lake Thurmond visitor’s center will remain open on weekends during the winter months.
Meanwhile, in other news from the Corps, it said will temporarily close the Hartwell Dam Quarry Hunting Area this week.
The area, located on the Georgia side of the lake near the intersection of Highways 181 and 29, will close today through Friday.
Officials said it is closing to the general public due to a deer hunt hosted by the Hartwell Project Office and the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
The Corps did say that all other Corps-managed recreation areas designated for archery and small game hunting for the 2012-2013 hunting season in both Georgia and South Carolina will remain open to the public.
