Classroom Supply Drive Underway

A drive underway now is looking to help get classrooms ready with the items they need when school opens back up in Stephens County next month.

Family Connection of Stephens County and St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church are teaming up on a classroom supply drive.

St. Matthias Rector The Very Rev. Mary Demmler said they have seen that there is a need for school supplies as students return from the Christmas and New Year’s holiday break.

“At the beginning of the year, there is always a push to donate school supplies for students that do not have them and to help stock the classrooms,” she said. “By mid year, those are gone and the teachers do not have the ability to purchase more. We want to help them start the second half of the school year as well (as they start) the first half.”

She went on to say that they are collecting all kinds of supplies that can help any grade level.

“Post-it notes are especially needed because teachers use those a lot, crayons, markers, pencils, copy paper,” said the Very Rev. Demmler.

Other items that people can donate include color pencils, Kleenex, white out, Clorox wipes, sheet protectors, loose leaf paper, erasers, masking tape, glue, pens, poster board, index cards, and more.

Items can be dropped off at the St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church office at 995 East Tugalo Street in Toccoa.

If the office is not open, the items can be left in a box that is provided on the front porch of the building.

The classroom supply drive will last through January 7.
