The city of Toccoa honors a local resident for her work over the years with animals.

Monday, the city commission read and presented a proclamation to Joan Allen.

Allen has been involved with the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter, as well as previously being involved with the Humane Society and Hearts for Homeless Pets.

Toccoa Vice-Mayor Evan Hellenga serves on the Humane Shelter board currently.

He said the city thanks Allen for her contributions of time, energy, and finances through the years on behalf of animals in the Toccoa-Stephens County community.

“Whereas, Joan served on the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter board for two years and whereas Joan shares her expertise on adoption and fostering programs for the wellbeing of lost, injured, and homeless animals,” said the proclamation read aloud by Hellenga. “Whereas, Joan actively rescued and sought medical care for countless animals within our county and whereas, Joan has volunteered hundreds of hours at the new shelter to welcome and introduce visitors to the services available.”

Allen said she appreciates everyone who has helped her take care of animals throughout the years.
