No charges will be filed against the driver who hit a little girl Wednesday evening in Franklin County.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. on the Ga. Highway 77 Extension/Lavonia Highway, just outside of Lavonia, according to Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post Assistant Commander Matt Baxley.

Baxley said the child, a two-year old little girl, ran down the driveway of the home and into the road into oncoming traffic.

“The vehicle was south on Georgia (Hwy.) 77 and a 2-year-old female ran in front of the vehicle and was struck,” said Baxley. “The child was transported to St. Mary’s in Lavonia, then airlifted from there to a hospital in Greenville, where the child passed away from the injuries sustained in the crash.”

The name of the child has not been released.

The driver of the vehicle, according to the incident report, was an older man in his 60’s who was driving a Chevy Colorado pick up truck.

Troopers said when he saw the child run into the road, he tried to swerve to keep from hitting her but could not.
