Canon Man Charged in Mother’s Death

Investigators with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office have leveled formal murder charges against a Canon man accused in the death of his mother.

Earlier this month, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Investigator Jimmy LeCroy announced that 40-year old John Robert Dye has been charged with felony murder, felony aggravated assault and felony animal cruelty.

Dye was also charged with felony animal cruelty because according to Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas, Dye had also killed his mother’s dog.

On the morning of Thursday, August 27th, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a home on Grady School Road just outside of Lavonia to do a welfare check.

When they arrived, they found the body of Dye’s mother, identified as 61-year old Cynthia R. McCollough.

Authorities say deputies also found Dye injured and believe the scene they walked in on was a botched murder-suicide.

Dye was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Recently, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office investigators, along with the Greenville, South Carolina Police, arrested Dye when he was released from the hospital.

After an extradition hearing in Greenville, Dye was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center.

LeCroy says the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
