A free event this Saturday is designed to help further acquaint the public to Stephens County’s Building Inspections Department.
The Stephens County Board of Commissioners and the Building Inspections Department is presenting an Introduction to Building Inspections and Contractor Appreciation Day on Saturday at the Stephens County Senior Center on Rose Lane in Toccoa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Stephens County Building Inspector Larry Krul said the event is open to the public and is designed for contractors, subcontractors, and those interested in significant home repair projects.
“The commissioners have asked me to open up the doors of Building Inspections to the general public here in Stephens County, just to give the basics, the ideas of what requires a building permit and what does not, why we are here, and what we are trying to accomplish,” said Krul.
Krul said he will have an official presentation at 11:15 a.m. that will last about an hour. Then, lunch will be provided at 12:15 p.m. and up until 3, he will be available to answer questions. There will also be door prizes.
He said the county wants to work with builders on the front end to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding code requirements.
“The first and foremost thing that I am trying to put out there is that the Stephens County Building Inspections Department is a department of service, rather than a department of regulation,” said Krul. “If I am not here to help the people that are doing construction and building and remodeling and repairing, then I am not doing my job and the department is not doing its (job).”
To that end, Krul said the event is also designed to show appreciation for contractors working in the county for their efforts in working with him on building inspections and code issues.
“We truly do appreciate the contractors and the subcontractors that I have been working with in the past couple of years,” said Krul. “It has been nothing short of a respectful pleasure to work with them and literally try to work for them in accomplishing what is required in the Building Inspections Department.”
