The leader of a blood bank that collects blood in Stephens and surrounding counties throughout the region will retire at the end of the year.

Blood Connection President and CEO Greg Hart announced recently that he will retire after more than 15 years leading the organization.

The Blood Connection recruits donors and collects blood within a 7,000 plus square mile area in northeast Georgia, northwestern South Carolina, and western North Carolina.

The organization’s Board of Trustees said it has retained a consulting firm to help choose Hart’s successor.

Hart will remain at the helm of the Blood Connection until December 31 or until his successor is appointed.

In a press release, the chairman of the board for the Blood Connection said that Hart has been a strong leader in the company’s 34-year history and adds that the board is grateful for Hart’s innumerable contributions to the organization.

The organization stated that during Hart’s leadership, it doubled its blood collections, constructed five new donation centers, and has begun work on a sixth new donation center.
