A team representing a local church comes out on top in this year’s BEESMART spelling and trivia bee.

The St. Matthias Saints, representing St. Matthias Episcopal Church of Toccoa, took this year’s competition, which was held last Thursday at Stephens County High School.

The St. Matthias team of Rebecca Howard, Fairlight Wright, and Gary Donahue spelled “visceroptosis” and “hosiery” correctly to win.

Second place went to the North Georgia Technical College team of Carolyn Adams, Alex Bladowski, and Angie Cowart.

The BEESMART competition is an annual fundraiser to benefit the Stephens Education Literacy Foundation, or SELF. Not only do teams pay to participate in the event, but the event also included a silent auction.

SELF Executive Director Ellen Alligood said that fundraising from the event seemed to go well.

“It was a very successful event and I am very thankful for everyone who showed up and supported SELF,” said Alligood. “It was a great turnout.”

SELF’s goal is to support literacy and education efforts throughout the community.
