BBB Says Look Now for Holiday Jobs

The holidays are approaching, and though a couple of months away Fred Elsberry with the Better Business Bureau says that it is now that you should seek part-time employment. “Once retailers decide what their needs are they get in a hiring mode and it will be hard to get in front of store managers” says Elsberry; “Get your application in. You never know, one of those part-time jobs could become a full-time job for people looking for that.”

Elsberry says that those looking for jobs should use caution especially while searching through the internet. “One thing to be cautious of is employment scams. Many use social media to try to get your personal information. They’ll send you an e-mail and maybe even a phone call saying they saw your resume’ on-line and you are the perfect candidate and they’ll ask for up front money or personal information. Avoid those folks.”

Elsberry advises job seekers to dress the part or dress as you would for any professional interview, Apply where you shop. You know the products where you shop and that will give you an edge over other applicants, and look to social media for opportunities.

Elsberry says when he speaks to high schools and colleges he always encourages job seekers to research the company that they are applying. “Check the website, what kind of job opportunities they have available, and what kind of corporate culture they have. You will find opportunities during the interview to share what you know about the company. That impressive knowledge may be just what you need to get the job.”

The Better Business Bureau says stores need to hire extra help for the holidays, however, some companies last year found they were shorthanded because of a strategy that saw many retail sales begin after Halloween and continue until December 31st.
